Public bug reported:
I am proposing that nvidia-driver (or the underlying nvidia-dkms)
packages should explicitly depend on or recommend the appropriate Linux
headers meta-package (e.g., linux-headers-generic or linux-headers-
generic-hwe-xxxx).
The Problem: Currently, when upgrading nvidia-driver-580, if the user
does not have the matching kernel headers installed, the DKMS module
build fails silently or causes a broken package state. This happened to
me when updating the kernel and nvidia-driver-580 simultaneously as
headers are not pulled in by default.
Proposed Solution: Please add a Recommends field to the debian/control
file for the driver packages: Recommends: linux-headers-generic | linux-
headers-generic-hwe-24.04
** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
