Public bug reported:

A 16GB Kingston USB stick formatted to NTFS was inserted into a ASUS K55
series laptop, running Lubuntu LTS (24.04) fully updated as of
2026-01-27. A folder on this PC was to be copied to the drive; this
contains 18 files totalling c. 406 MB size, initially on the home user
space (ext4).

PCManFS-Qt was used to drag and drop the folder onto the mounted drive.

I was immediately suspicious as there was no Copying progress window,
and PCManFS-Qt reported the full folder with all files instantly present
on the USB stick. I opened a terminal and used df to check the drive
space use, waited c. 10 seconds, and repeated. df reported identical
file system numbers.

I now waited c. 1 minute and checked df again, which also returned
identical numbers. At this point I believed I was being lied to but
proceeded to use the PCManFS-Qt Unmount symbol to unmount the USB. This
seemed to operate normally.

Checking about the system I saw no indications of issues, upsets or
warnings. I still did not believe this instantaneous file copy, so
decided to shut the PC down before removing the drive. I used "init 0"
from the terminal (which I note needed no superuser login). The PC began
shutdown but halted with an open handles warning banner across a dark
screen (I forget the exact verbiage). I clicked the option to shop
shutdown given, and waited another minute. Using init 0 again the PC now
shut down with no warnings. I removed the USB.

I pluged this USB into a second Lubuntu laptop (a Toshiba C660 Satellite
running 25.10 and fully updated) which immediately said the USB was
corrupted and refused to mount it.

I moved the USB to a Windows 10 PC; this stated the USB was corrupt and
offered to repair it. I accepted and the USB now seems normal. All the
files seem uncorrupted.

The Lubuntu OS at a deep level knew something was wrong, yet the Unmount
presented as successful. My particular concern here is the lack of Copying
window, GUI warnings, Taskbar warnings or terminal warnings - even though these
were actively looked for.
