This bug has just shown up in the latest ubuntu 24.04.3 server kernel:
6.8.0-100-generic #100-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Note: My understanding is that this is a kernel BUG, but the app
developer has created a work-around that is significantly less process
efficient. This work-around detects the kernel bug and does things less
efficiently to get around it. The kernel really should be patched with
the fix that Juerg posted (above).
