Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Release: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) with HWE kernel

  Package Version: nvidia-dkms-580-open 580.65.06-0ubuntu1

  GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090

  What I expected to happen:
Kernel 6.17.0-14-generic (HWE) and the NVIDIA open driver should install and
work together without issues.

  What happened instead:
Ubuntu pushed kernel 6.17.0-14-generic via the HWE package
(linux-generic-hwe-24.04) while the nvidia-dkms-580-open package was still at
version 580.65.06,
which is incompatible with kernel 6.17. The DKMS module build fails with exit
status 2 during the kernel post-install script, leaving 4 packages in a
  broken/unconfigured state: linux-headers-6.17.0-14-generic,
linux-headers-generic-hwe-24.04, linux-generic-hwe-24.04, and
linux-image-6.17.0-14-generic.

The underlying issue is that the drm_helper_mode_fill_fb_struct() function
signature changed in kernel 6.17 (upstream commit a34cc7bf1034). NVIDIA fixed
this in their open-gpu-kernel-modules repository and shipped the fix in
driver version 580.95+. However, Ubuntu's repos were still shipping 580.65.06
at the
time the 6.17 HWE kernel was pushed to users, making it impossible to boot
the new kernel with a working NVIDIA driver.

  DKMS build error (from /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/580.65.06/build/make.log):
  'make' -j32 KERNEL_UNAME=6.17.0-14-generic IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1
SYSSRC=/lib/modules/6.17.0-14-generic/build LD=/usr/bin/ld.bfd
CONFIG_X86_KERNEL_IBT=
  modules
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 6.17.0-14-generic
(x86_64)

  Resolution:
  Manually installing nvidia-dkms-580-open version 580.126.09-0ubuntu0.24.04.1
(available from noble-updates/restricted and the graphics-drivers PPA) resolved
the issue. However, this required also working around a local CUDA repo
priority pin (cuda-repository-pin-600 at priority 600) that was blocking the
  upgrade.

  Suggested improvement:
The HWE kernel and NVIDIA driver packages should be tested for compatibility
before being pushed together. If a new HWE kernel is known to break the current
NVIDIA DKMS driver, the driver update should be published simultaneously or
the kernel update should be held until the driver is ready.
