Public bug reported:
Hardware:
04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. BCM43142 802.11b/g/n
[14e4:4365] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company BCM43142 [103c:804a]
Driver:
Kernel driver in use: wl
bcmwl-kernel-source version: 6.30.223.271+bdcom-23ubuntu1.1
Working kernel:
6.14.0-29-generic
Problematic kernel:
6.17.0-14-generic (HWE)
Behavior:
- System upgrades kernel to 6.17.0-14-generic
- During installation, DKMS attempts to build wl module
- Build fails
- linux-headers-6.17 remains unconfigured
- dpkg reports unfinished configuration
- Any subsequent apt install triggers repeated DKMS failure
- Package manager becomes effectively unusable
Observed behavior:
The wl module may continue working if previously built, but package
management remains in broken state until kernel 6.17 is removed.
Resolution:
Booting into 6.14 kernel and removing 6.17 restores system stability and
package manager functionality.
Impact:
This creates a serious user experience issue on systems using BCM43142,
especially fresh installations where kernel updates are applied
automatically.
Expected behavior:
DKMS build should either:
- Successfully compile for 6.17
OR
- Fail gracefully without leaving dpkg in a broken state.
** Affects: bcmwl (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
