Colin - thanks for the post, that solution seems to work great. I'm running Compiz + Emerald and for some reason, just changing "/usr/bin /beryl-manager" to "/usr/bin/compiz" started KDE without any window manager, but using "/usr/bin/emerald" fixed everything.
