Is there any progress on this? This has effectively turned the "hardware
enablement" kernel into a hardware disablement kernel for us if our
users upgrade their kernel package.

This is also a very annoying condition in that it is very hard to fix
remotely for laptops that are on the move because they effectively lose
all networking. Even though that ship has kind of already sailed, these
kinds of issues simply should not happen at all.
