After more discussions with the users that were having this problem, we can't 
reproduce  this anymore. There was 2 issues that led us to think that g-r-d 
might have an issue, but it does not.
- mstsc.exe behaves very weirdly with .\ - sometimes it erases the suffix, 
sometimes it does not, depending on if you enter you username before clicking 
on "connect" or on the prompt that comes up after you do.
- gnome settings let you enable Remote Desktop even if you don't enter 
credentials and, in this situation, Remote Desktop does not work. This is a 
Gnome Settings UX issue, reported here [1]
