Hello,
After upgrading Ubuntu 24.04 (noble) to the HWE kernel
6.17.0-14.14~24.04.1, my system became unbootable (GRUB prompt / kernel
panic “Unable to mount root fs”). Booting the previous kernel works.
The kernel upgrade triggers DKMS rebuild of VirtualBox modules and
fails:
dkms autoinstall on 6.17.0-14-generic/x86_64 failed for virtualbox(10)
dpkg then fails configuring:
linux-headers-6.17.0-14-generic (post-installation script returned exit
status 11)
linux-image-6.17.0-14-generic (post-installation script returned exit
status 11)
This leaves the system in a broken state and the next reboot fails.
Environment
Ubuntu 24.04 (noble)
HWE stack: linux-generic-hwe-24.04
Kernel upgrade: 6.14.0-37 → 6.17.0-14
VirtualBox version: 7.0.16_Ubuntu162802 (VBoxManage -v)
DKMS shows: virtualbox/7.0.16, 6.14.0-37-generic, x86_64: installed
Expected result
Kernel upgrade should succeed even if a DKMS module fails, or VirtualBox DKMS
should build correctly on kernel 6.17.
Workaround
Booting the previous kernel works. Removing/holding kernel 6.17 avoids the boot
failure.
