Public bug reported:
Hi,
I've noticed that recently my Ubuntu 24.04 upgraded the kernel from 6.14
to 6.17. After that hibernation almost never works at the first try, I'm
getting these errors:
[343487.769614] PM: hibernation: Normal pages needed: 1971008 + 1024, available
pages: 1106071
[343487.769617] PM: hibernation: Not enough free memory
[343487.542736] PM: hibernation: Error -12 creating image
I have 16GB of RAM and initially had 24GB of swap on an LV. I extended
it to 32GB, which did not make any difference.
Running free -h before the attempt shows this:
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 11Gi 9.7Gi 910Mi 1.6Gi 2.9Gi 1.7Gi
Swap: 31Gi 15Gi 16Gi
I found a lot of mentions of similar issues dating back many years, but
no solution that would work for me and surprisingly no good explanation
of what this means. Is it lack of RAM or swap space? Neither makes sense
to me as a kernel noob, because if it's the former, why not swapping out
some stuff to make room, there is plenty of swap space available, which
is also the reason why the latter doen't make sense.
The only thing that does help is closing a couple of applications and
trying again, but this kind of defeats the purpose of hibernation. Also,
my usage pattern did not change, it used to work well with 6.14.
I have /sys/power/image_size set to 0 (even before switching to 6.17)
I've also tried adding a script which dooes "sync && echo 3 >
/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" to /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep which did not
help.
The current kernel package version I'm on is 6.17.0-14.14~24.04.1
Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
