Public bug reported:
Bug Report Draft: Audio Regression on Kernel 6.17 (VIA VT1708S)
Summary
Systems using the VIA VT1708S audio codec (AMD SBx00 Azalia balance) experience
complete audio output loss after upgrading to kernel 6.17.0-14-generic. While
the device is detected by ALSA, PipeWire/PulseAudio fails to recognize analog
output ports, incorrectly defaulting to a phantom HDMI profile.
Hardware Information
Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3
CPU: AMD FX-8350
Audio Controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel
HDA) [1002:4383]
Codec: VIA VT1708S [1106:0397]
Software Context
OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS (Noble)
Working Kernel: 6.5.0-060500-generic
Broken Kernel: 6.17.0-14-generic (6.17.9)
Sound Server: PipeWire 1.0.5
Observed Behavior
On kernel 6.17, aplay -l lists the device, but there is no sound from speakers
or headphones.
pactl list cards shows all analog ports (Line Out, Headphones) as "not
available".
PipeWire selects "Digital Stereo (HDMI)" as the default profile for the
motherboard audio card, which is technically incorrect for this codec.
Reverting to kernel 6.5 restores functionality.
Technical Details
The issue persists even after removing legacy snd_hda_intel parameters
(probe_mask, poll_mode). The regression appears to be in the snd_hda_codec_via
driver or how the HDA controller handles the VT1708S codec in the 6.17 branch.
Potential Workaround / Investigation
Executing sudo alsa force-reload has been reported by some users to fix it
temporarily, suggesting a initialization race or timing issue in the new kernel.
** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
