Binary package hint: ekiga
Hi,
This has been a long-standing issue for me, both on Feisty and now on
Gutsy, and both with my Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000 webcam and now with
my Pro 9000 webcam.
In short, switching from using the webcam to not using it is temperamental.
For example, if I fire up Ekiga and then click on the Display Images button,
the webcam light lights up (on the camera hardware) and a live image from my
web cam gets displayed OK in Ekiga. BUT if I then click on the button again to
turn off the image, the image correctly disappears but the little red light on
the web cam stays on. (I've waited about 10minutes for it to go out but it
does not.)
Now comes the real problem.
If I now click on the Display Images button again to bring up the live image
again, Ekiga fails to do so. It fails to talk to the webcam device and
complains about Ekiga not supporting the colour map or something. I then just
see the bouncing ball moving image instead.
To clear this problem, all I need to is unlpug my webcam from the USB
port and reinsert it 2 seconds later.
After about 3 or 4 iterations of doing all this (Clicking on the icon
once to show images, then again to turn off, then again to turn on, and
removing USB plug and reinserting as necessary) Ekiga might actually
work properly and properly deactivate the web cam when I tell it to.
Finally, I notice that if I just fire up Ekiga and don't play with the
Display Images button at all, but instead call some one, then Ekiga is
more reliable in showing the images (i.e. when the call connects) and
then later turning off the web cam light after I hang up.
So, the mechanism of Ekiga establishing a connection with the USB web
camera and then, more importantly, freeing the camera when finished
needs to be made more robust I think.
