Public bug reported:
Setting up a custom cursor from a bitmap and displaying it via
XDefineCursor used to work under Ubuntu 20.04 (and likely 22.04), but
under 24.04 with either an Xwayland or direct Xorg session it does not
manage to change the cursor.
Attached is a simple test case, cursor.c
cc -o cursor cursor.c -lX11
running it should produce a small window, clicking in the window should
change the cursor to a red north-west pointing arrow. The program will
exit after 30s.
There are no observable errors in the log file, nor do any Xlib calls
error when setting up the window and cursor.
Code similar to this test program has worked with X11 releases and
operating systems since 1988 - Ubuntu 24.04 is the first time this
failure has been seen.
