Public bug reported:
After upgrading Ubuntu 24.04 via apt upgrade on 2026-03-01, the system installed
linux-image-6.17.0-14-generic. The system no longer boots with this kernel.
Boot fails very early with:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-
block(0,0)
The same system boots normally with kernel 6.14.0-37-generic.
Hardware:
Laptop: HP 14s-fq1xxx
CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 5300U
Storage: SOLIDIGM SSDPFKNU512GZH (NVMe)
Root filesystem: ext4 on /dev/nvme0n1p2
Boot mode: UEFI
What I already verified:
• Root UUID is correct and unchanged.
• NVMe modules are present in initramfs.
• initramfs was rebuilt multiple times using update-initramfs.
• MODULES=most already set.
• NVMe device visible and mounts correctly under 6.14 kernel.
• Bootloader configuration unchanged.
• No disk or filesystem errors.
Evidence that this is kernel specific:
uname -r (working): 6.14.0-37-generic
6.17 kernel consistently panics before mounting root.
NVMe driver exists in initramfs:
lsinitramfs shows nvme.ko and nvme-core.ko present.
Regression behaviour:
System was fully functional before the upgrade.
Failure began immediately after installing kernel 6.17.0-14.
This appears to be a regression affecting NVMe initialization.
Booting an older kernel (6.14) works reliably.
Please investigate regression in 6.17 NVMe / early PCI initialization.
I can test patches or provide additional logs if needed.
