I found out one can actually select autopkgtest runner instance type via configs, so filed https://code.launchpad.net/~otto/autopkgtest- cloud/+git/autopkgtest-cloud/+merge/501654 to use for MariaDB hosts with more memory. Seems this is what the MySQL packages and old MariaDB packages had been doing already.
