Public bug reported:
Heya! Been unable to start a session with 24.04/Plasma/Wayland since
the end of January. I hope this report is in good form; apologies if
not.
# System information
* Ubuntu version: 24.04.4
* machine: Dell Precision 7550 laptop
* lspci description of the video card
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation TU117GLM [Quadro
T1000 Mobile] (rev a1)
# Symptoms
* On the login screen:
* choosing "Plasma (Wayland)",
* typing in the password,
* hitting Enter,
* the system remains frozen on the grayed out password entry; the session
does not start.
* Cannot switch back to a TTY.
* Can log in over SSH & poke around.
Symptoms started on 2026-02-02, after an 'apt full-upgrade' that
included (among other things) the Mesa bump from LP#2126037 (25.0.7 >
25.2.8).
# Timeline
* 2025-*: daily-driving 24.04/Plasma/Wayland
* 2026-01-28: last successful boot & login on Wayland
* 2026-02-02: upgrade & reboot; Wayland can no longer get past the login screen
Currently logging on "Plasma (X11)" as a workaround.
# Further comments
Considered filing this against plasma-desktop; opted for mesa because of
1. the coincidence with the 25.0.7 > 25.2.8 bump,
2. a second report of the problem, worked around by downgrading mesa packages:
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/24-04-kubuntu-wayland-stuck-on-login-
screen/76085/4
Since this is a $DAYJOB station, I try not to rock the boat too much (no
downgrading, no Mesa/Plasma PPA update), so can't confirm that
downgrading workaround.
Poking at the attached logs; apologies for the haphazard train of
thought:

In the Feb 03 session startup, I do see
Feb 03 07:35:01 legouguec-Precision-7550 kwin_wayland_wrapper[4418]: No
backend specified, automatically choosing drm
but then crickets; no more news from kwin_wayland_wrapper. Assuming
this crashes or hangs, I guess this could lead to e.g. plasma-
ksplash.service hanging, since that service has 'After=plasma-
kwin_wayland.service'.
From there, looking for more 'drm' logs in the boot sequence, I see some
diff wrt 'nouveau' logs, but not sure if that's of any relevance.
Let me know if I can provide more information, and again, apologies if
this report is not in good form.
