Please build an autopkgtest image and try running that test on it:
$ autopkgtest-build-lxd ubuntu-daily:resolute
[...]
$ autopkgtest ... -- lxd autopkgtest/ubuntu/resolute/amd64
Let us know how that works.
("What should autopkgtest assume/expect from an autopkgtest testbed base
image" is a bit of an open problem with no easy answer.)
