Update: I have not dared to reboot with 7.0, but 6.19 has been stable
again, so it is not a hardware issue with the disks (it impacted more
than one filesystem on different disks).  I have done a test read of all
the files on the disk and found that some regularly accessed files such
as /var/log/syslog, and some of the dotfiles used by gnome and firefox
were corrupted, and ultimately I had to remvoe those... however the
system is now fine, albeit I will have to wipe the gnome config so I can
log back into that account.... I'm using a temporary account I created
for now, as I don't have time to fix it properly until the weekend.
