Public bug reported:
System:
Kubuntu 24.04
KDE Plasma
KWallet enabled
Google Chrome installed from official .deb package
Problem:
When Thunderbird is installed as a Snap package, clicking a link inside
Thunderbird can cause Google Chrome and, apparently, other Chromium-
based browsers to lose all authenticated web sessions.
Observed behavior:
Scenario #1
1. New session started, wallet is locked (passworded).
2. Chrome is not running.
3. A link is clicked in Thunderbird (Snap version).
1. Chrome starts without asking for the KWallet password.
2. Websites in Chrome (Jira, Figma, ChatGPT, YouTube, etc) appear logged out
(cookies cannot be decrypted).
3. If Chrome is closed and started manually, it correctly prompts for the
KWallet password and sessions work normally again (however, each one requires
new authorization).
Scenario #2
1. Chrome is already running with active authenticated sessions.
2. A link is clicked in Thunderbird (Snap version).
3. Chrome opens the link.
4. Immediately afterwards all websites appear logged out.
Important observation:
If Thunderbird Snap is replaced with the official Mozilla tarball build
(non-snap), the issue disappears completely. Opening links from
Thunderbird works normally and Chrome sessions remain intact.
This strongly suggests that the Thunderbird Snap sandbox environment
interferes with KWallet / DBus integration when launching the browser.
I was able to reproduce issue on 2 computers running Kubuntu.
Expected behavior:
Opening links from Thunderbird should not affect existing browser
sessions and Chrome should maintain access to KWallet.
Actual behavior:
Opening a link from Thunderbird Snap causes Chrome to lose access to
stored encrypted cookies, resulting in logout from all websites.
