Public bug reported:

Expected:
Normal PNG and JPG images should open in gwenview and nomacs.

Actual:
After apt upgrade on 2026-03-18, gwenview and nomacs started segfaulting when
opening images. Baloo File Extractor also appeared to crash when touching image
files.

What changed:
apt upgrade changed libexiv2-27 from 0.27.2-8ubuntu2.7 to
0.27.2-8ubuntu2.7+esm1 on 2026-03-18 12:38:52.

Evidence (segfaults):
- gwenview (opening PNG) backtrace hits Exiv2::ExifData::begin()
- gwenview (opening JPG) backtrace hits Exiv2::Image::setMetadata()
- nomacs backtrace also hits Exiv2::Image::setMetadata()

Confirmation:
Downgrading libexiv2-27 back to 0.27.2-8ubuntu2.7 immediately restored normal
PNG and JPG opening in both gwenview and nomacs.

Relevant package history:
- 2026-03-18 12:38:52 apt upgrade upgraded libexiv2-27 from 0.27.2-8ubuntu2.7
to 0.27.2-8ubuntu2.7+esm1
- Reinstalling the same versions did not help
- Downgrading fixed the issue

Reporting the bug using Apport/ubuntu-bug did not work for me.
Not being able to open any images on a system is quite a serious
