Title: NVIDIA 580 driver fails to detect external HDMI display on kernel 6.17
with hybrid AMD+NVIDIA GPU
Description:
On Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with kernel 6.17.0-19-generic, the NVIDIA 580.126.09
driver fails to detect any connected display devices on a hybrid AMD+NVIDIA
system. The HDMI port (physically wired to the NVIDIA dGPU) produces no signal
and xrandr does not list the output as connected.
Hardware:
Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ACH6H
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H
dGPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU
iGPU: AMD Radeon Cezanne (Vega)
HDMI port: physically connected to NVIDIA dGPU
Kernel: 6.17.0-19-generic
NVIDIA driver: 580.126.09
GPU mode: prime-select nvidia
Symptoms:
sudo dmesg | grep nvidia repeatedly shows: nvidia-modeset: ERROR: GPU:0: Failed
detecting connected display devices
xrandr --listproviders returns Providers: number : 0
External HDMI display receives no signal
Internal display (eDP) works normally
Workaround:
Booting with kernel 6.8.0-51-generic resolves the issue. External HDMI display
is detected and works correctly on 6.8 with the same NVIDIA 580 driver.
Steps to reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Boot with kernel 6.17.0-19-generic
Set GPU mode to nvidia via prime-select
Connect external display via HDMI
Run xrandr | grep connected — HDMI output not listed
Expected: External HDMI display detected and functional
Actual: No display output detected, nvidia-modeset errors in dmesg
