Public bug reported:
Ubuntu release:
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Affected package:
linux-restricted-modules-hwe-6.17
(binary package involved: linux-modules-nvidia-580-generic-hwe-24.04)
Hardware:
- Lenovo LOQ 17i Gen 10
- Intel CPU
- Hybrid graphics: Intel iGPU + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060 Laptop GPU
- Secure Boot enabled
Problem:
On this system, Ubuntu recommends the NVIDIA 580 open driver path, but
installation/upgrade fails with dependency/configuration errors and the NVIDIA
stack does not become usable.
The error shown is:
package linux-modules-nvidia-580-generic-hwe-24.04 (not installed) failed to
install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
What I expected to happen:
- The recommended NVIDIA driver packages should install cleanly
- The system should reboot normally into a graphical session
- nvidia-smi should detect the RTX 5060 Laptop GPU
- PRIME/offload should work on this hybrid Intel/NVIDIA laptop
What happened instead:
- linux-modules-nvidia-580-generic-hwe-24.04 failed to install/upgrade
- dependency problems left packages unconfigured
- nvidia-smi did not detect the GPU correctly
- PRIME/offload was not working
- after the driver change, graphical boot became unstable on newer HWE kernels
Observed kernels during testing:
- 6.17.0-14-generic
- 6.17.0-19-generic
Additional details:
This laptop uses NVIDIA Blackwell graphics (RTX 5060 Laptop) in a hybrid
Intel/NVIDIA configuration with Secure Boot enabled. The issue appears when
trying to use the Ubuntu-recommended NVIDIA path on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with HWE
6.17. After the failed install/upgrade, the system could become unable to reach
a stable graphical desktop.
Workaround / recovery:
I recovered by booting the older stable kernel (6.17.0-14-generic), cleaning up
the broken NVIDIA package state, and removing NVIDIA again. The machine is
currently stable only with Intel graphics; the RTX 5060 is not usable.
Commands whose output should already be attached by apport or can be useful:
- lsb_release -rd
- uname -r
- mokutil --sb-state
- ubuntu-drivers devices
- apt-cache policy linux-restricted-modules-hwe-6.17
- apt-cache policy linux-modules-nvidia-580-generic-hwe-24.04
- dpkg -l | grep -E 'nvidia|linux-modules-nvidia'
- journalctl -b -p err | grep -i nvidia
- nvidia-smi
- xrandr --listproviders
