Rationale:
As Ubuntu and the wider Linux ecosystem transition to Wayland by default,
debugging keyboard mapping issues has become more complex. Unlike X11, where
xkbcomp can easily fetch the current state, Wayland requires specific protocol
support.
The xkbcli-dump-keymap-wayland tool (introduced in newer upstream
versions of libxkbcommon) is the standard way to:
Verify the active keymap currently loaded by the Wayland compositor.
Debug custom XKB layouts and RMLVO (Rules, Model, Layout, Variant,
Options) configurations in a Wayland environment.
Troubleshoot input issues without having to restart the entire session.
Upstream Information:
The upstream libxkbcommon has already released versions (e.g., 1.13.1) that
include this tool as part of the libxkbcommon-tools package. Many other
rolling-release or modern distributions have already updated to these versions
to support Wayland developers.
Impact:
Without this tool, users like myself (working on robotics engineering and
custom hardware integration) find it extremely difficult to verify if a Wayland
compositor is correctly applying custom XKB configurations. This hinders the
development of accessible input methods and specialized hardware support.
Request:
Please consider syncing or upgrading libxkbcommon from Debian Unstable or
backporting the newer version to the current Ubuntu release to bridge this
functional gap for Wayland users.
Note for 26.04: As 25.10 is currently in the development cycle, syncing
libxkbcommon from Debian Unstable (where 1.13.1-1 is already available)
would be a straightforward way to provide this essential Wayland tool
for the upcoming release.
