Public bug reported:

This is a wishlist item to add the supermount package into the Ubuntu
family of systems to manage floppy drives, CD and DVD drives, USB keys,
and other removable filesystems.

It would be nice if the user would be able to choose whether supermount
or the current HAL managed system would be used for entire classes of
drives; for example, maybe using supermount for USB floppy discs and
CD/DVD drives is great, but not so much for USB keys or USB hard drives.

The advantage that supermount would provide would be the ability to
treat mountpoints that belong to the floppy disk and other removable
drives like can be done in Windows: they can be removed when not in
use, and all writes to the media would be completely synchronous (e.g.,
the 'cp' program would return when it becomes safe to remove a floppy
when a file is copied to it).

This inclusion request would require some sort of glue to tie it into
the system, and that is beyond the ability that I have. However, it
would greatly reduce the work required since it would eliminate the
mounting and un-mounting of media.
