I basically have the same comment and problem, most recently related to a bug that was apparently fixed by the update xserver-xord-core patch 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.3 that (I think) undoes a recent xserver patch.
Look, I want Ubuntu to succeed, but this is increasingly annoying... I'm beginning to doubt the entire OSS approach. It's only Microsoft's laziness and incompetence that's creating the window for Linux... A couple of versions ago I felt I was able to recommend Ubuntu to non- technical users, but not lately. Gutsy has certainly been a disappointment. *LOTS* of new problems, and I can only think of one significant functional improvement--and now the patches are making things worse.
