Public bug reported:
Hardware:
- Dell Inspiron 5521, AMD64
- Dual boot: Windows + Ubuntu
Steps to reproduce:
1. Ubuntu software updater ran (did not reboot after)
2. Installed kernel 7.0.3-070003-generic via ubuntu-mainline-kernel.sh without
rebooting first
3. Rebooted the system
4. Selected Ubuntu from BIOS boot menu (F12)
5. Black screen immediately after boot selection, system hangs indefinitely
6. GRUB menu never appears
7. Because GRUB menu was not visible and system was stuck, had to boot into
Ubuntu Live USB
8. From Live USB, chrooted into the installed system
9. Removed kernel 7.0.3 packages via dpkg --purge:
- linux-headers-7.0.3-070003
- linux-headers-7.0.3-070003-generic
- linux-image-unsigned-7.0.3-070003-generic
- linux-modules-7.0.3-070003-generic
10. Ran update-grub and grub-install /dev/sda from chroot
11. System now boots normally with kernel 6.17.0-23-generic
Expected behavior:
Kernel 7.0.3 should boot successfully or at minimum fall back gracefully.
Actual behavior:
Complete black screen after BIOS boot menu. No kernel messages, no GRUB, no
display output whatsoever. System is unresponsive.
Note:
Kernel 6.17.0-23-generic and 6.17.0-22-generic both work perfectly on this
hardware.
This may be a regression in kernel 7.0.3 affecting older Intel GPU or display
initialization on Dell Inspiron 5521.
