I think this may be fixed in 26.04, at least for firefox!

I installed 26.04, set up NFS with kerberos, logged in with an NFS home
directory, and started firefox. Nothing happened for about ten seconds,
and then (to my surprise and delight) a firefox window opened with my
profile correctly. Subsequent starts were in under a second. So I think
this has finally been fixed. This saves a lot of work disabling snaps
and installing firefox from other places.

Thank you whoever fixed this. Your work is much appreciated.

I haven't checked lxd, which also had similar problems with some things
being done as root but reading the user's home directory.

(I posted the same message in the related bug
