You have been subscribed to a public bug:
After being forced to upgrade from 25.04 → 25.10, my system’s standard
Ubuntu apt repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ were removed or
disabled, preventing sudo apt update and installs of third‑party VPN
clients (OpenVPN, ProtonVPN). No manual changes to apt sources were made
before the failure.
Observed
Ubuntu mirror entries missing or disabled in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ after
upgrade
sudo apt update fails; packages (e.g., openvpn) cannot be installed
ProtonVPN installer does not modify system apt sources
Expected
Upgrade should preserve or re-enable default Ubuntu apt repositories
automatically.
Impact
Users forced to move from 25.04→25.10 cannot install or update packages until
repositories are manually restored.
Diagnostics to include
lsb_release -a
sudo apt update (output)
ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
Contents of /etc/apt/sources.list and files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
/var/log/dist-upgrade/ (if present)
