Public bug reported:
Environment:
OS: Linux Mint 22.1 (Ubuntu Noble 24.04 base)
Kernel: 6.17.0-23-generic
libfprint version: 1:1.94.7+tod1-0ubuntu5~24.04.6
fprintd version: 1.94.3-1
Device:
Laptop: Acer Swift SFX14-71G
Fingerprint sensor: FPC L:0000 FW:1425037
USB ID: 10a5:a305
What was expected:
Fingerprint enrollment should complete successfully and allow fingerprint login.
What happens instead:
Enrollment progresses through multiple stages but always fails with
enroll-unknown-error at the end. The UI reports "unknown error occurred."
Relevant logs (journalctl -b | grep -i fpc):
fprintd: fpc_enroll_check_duplicate_cb error: This finger has already enrolled
fprintd: Device reported an error during enrollment
biometric-authenticationd: undefined symbol: fp_device_get_type (in
libfprint-2-tod1-fpc-9800)
Additional context:
The libfprint-2-tod1-fpc package from ppa:libfprint-tod1-group/ppa installs a
driver for the 10a5:9800 sensor, which is not the correct driver for the
10a5:a305. No TOD driver exists for the 10a5:a305 variant. This sensor appears
on multiple Acer Swift Go models. The 10a5:9800 driver partially works
(enrollment stages pass) but enrollment ultimately fails, suggesting the two
chips share a similar protocol. A dedicated TOD driver for 10a5:a305 is needed.
fprintd-enroll output:

Enrolling right-index-finger finger.
