The error was this (according to logfile):
Nov 19 09:30:47 worktop12 dovecot[4070337]: doveconf: Fatal: Error in
configuration file /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-ssl.conf line 12: ssl_cert:
Can't open file /etc/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem: No such file or
directory
This file is created on install with local signature through `ssl-cert`.
It's likely that you deleted it manually, hence dovecot fails to start.
You should either re-create the file with ssl-cert.service or (better) deploy a
trusted tls certificate which you can then reference from the dovecot config.
Unless I misinterpret your logfiles, I think this is not a bug in
dovecot or Ubuntu.
