It appears the corruption part of this bug was my gnome-shell commit
af03314f20dda315835537cf32f7ff212aa3d9fe. But reverting that alone only
makes the main bug less animated. So you will need a different fix and
it's unclear if reverting my commit will be a necessary step along the
way.
