Public bug reported:
After rebooting, relatively recently after a kernel update (but not
immediately, I think), system booted to BusyBox (initramfs). `initramfs`
reported that `/proc/cmdline` failed because it could not find the root
partition by its UUID. No hard drives were detected in `/dev` (sd* or
nvme*). `/etc/fstab` was empty, as was `/proc/partitions`. `fsck` did
nothing. dmesg reported `ahci probe failed -12`
after some assisted debugging, it became clear that `modprobe vmd`
failed because `/lib/modules` does not contain `vmd.ko`. reverting to
kernel 6.17.0-23 immediately resolved the problem.
