I can reproduce this on Ubuntu 26.04 too.
The issue is that 26.04 now uses the Rust version of chown by default
(rust-coreutils 0.8.0-0ubuntu3). The classic GNU version is still
installed, but you have to specifically run it as gnu chown.Adding a
colon after the name is supposed to automatically update the group too.
The GNU version gets this right, but the Rust one just ignores it and
leaves the old group behind.
