Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: udev
Kubuntu 7.10, udev 113-0ubuntu16
udev seems not to load the appropriate driver for USB devices.
When I hotplug eg a USB stick, it recognises the event but doesn't do anything
else:
UEVENT[1200851503.450300] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb5/5-1

(usb_endpoint)
UDEV [1200851503.522996] add /class/usb_device/usbdev5.10 (usb_device)
When I modprobe the driver (usb-storage) manually, it works as it
should.
Same with an Palm Zire 71 and the visor driver.
On my laptop with exactly the same versions it works; I couldn't find
any differences.
Workaround: Manual load of the drivers.
If anybody could point me to a possible debugging strategy, I could
investigate further...
