I have tested this and I can reproduce the behavior that Matthew sees
when upgrading sssd. The sssd server fails to start during the upgrade
process (probably because of timing issues). When started manually after
the upgrade everything works as expected.

The only comment I have is that I checked the post install script for
sssd-common and it is using deb-systemd-invoke to start the services
after the update.
