Public bug reported:
I installed gimp using apt install gimp on a pretty fresh (<1mo old)
Ubuntu Server 26.04 installation (with the ubuntu-desktop metapackage
previously installed).
I opened gimp, dragged an image directly from a Firefox tab into the
Gimp window, and although it performed extremely sluggishly, the image
did in fact pop up in a new Gimp project available for editing.
Actually working in the new project was incredibly laggy--as in
1000-3000ms for every mouse click to make anything happen in any tool--
and then I discovered that I could not change the font inside the text
tool; free typing the names of installed fonts was accepted but the
actual font did not change, and typing did not result in auto-completion
of installed font names either.
When I attempted to save the project, I got an error dialog titled "The
folder contents could not be displayed" with explanatory text "HTTP
Client Error: Forbidden."
This clued me in that gimp had attempted to set the CWD to the remote
server which hosted the image, and in doing so, had broken many other
functions inside the app. Thankfully, I was able to change directory and
save the project to my home directory despite the error dialog--and once
it was saved into my local home directory, the lag went away and all
functions including font selection behaved as normal.
