I tested version 4.95-4ubuntu2.10 of the package and can confirm that the problem is fixed there. The exim process does not crash any longer and there is no message in the panic log when providing a problematic name in the EHLO / HELO command. Instead, Exim responds with
501 Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s) which is the expected behavior.
