loupe 46.2-0ubuntu1 using glycin-loaders 1.0.1+dfsg-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 24.04
ignores the gif loopcount attribute and loops forever.
Also loupe (50.0-0ubuntu2, glycin-loaders 2.1.1+ds-0ubuntu1) in Ubuntu 26.04
has the same problem.
loupe is the default viewer for gifs for the Ubuntu-desktop, so if
present, it will be used for things like opening Desktop gif files. If
not present, the eog viewer will be used, and it does not ignore the gif
loopcount (in 24.04).
Three test files are attached, with expected results of running the animation:
bat.gif -- no loopcount, should do one pass of the animation.
bat2.gif -- loopcount=2, should do three passes of the animation
bat0.gif -- loopcount=0, should do continuous repeat of the animation.
Running firefox with a file://.....bat?.gif will run the animation loops as
documented.
What actually happens:
From a terminal, loupe bat.gif will open a window and run the gif animation
continuously, as will
any of the other bat?.gif files.
Since the 24.04 reverse depends on loupe are absent, it will probably not be
installed by default.
In that case, the eog viewer will be used, and it works properly. Before
installing loupe,
you may doubleclick on the bat?.gifs to see how the desktop runs them: properly
with the eog viewer, but continuously after the (default) loupe viewer has been
installed.
