Public bug reported:
xdg-desktop-portal-gnome crashed with SIGSEGV while OBS was requesting
screen/window capture through the portal. This happened shortly after a
GNOME/GDM/Xorg session rebuild on a hybrid AMD iGPU + NVIDIA PRIME on-
demand system.
Environment:
- Ubuntu 24.04
- Kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic
- Session: GNOME on Xorg/GDM
- PRIME mode: on-demand
- Default GPU: AMD Raphael iGPU
- Offload GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
- NVIDIA driver: 580.159.03
- xdg-desktop-portal-gnome: 46.2-0ubuntu1
- OBS: 32.1.2 from obsproject PPA
Timeline:
- 2026-06-20 03:57 CST: GDM/Xorg desktop session was rebuilt.
- Xorg logged NVIDIA display configuration failures: "NVIDIA(G0): Failed to
set the display configuration" and mode setting failed with "Insufficient
permissions".
- Xorg also logged AMD/display teardown errors including "AMDGPU(0): failed
to set mode: Permission denied".
- 2026-06-20 03:58:36 CST: portal window association failed while OBS was
starting/capturing.
- 2026-06-20 03:58:40 CST: kernel logged xdg-desktop-portal-gnome SIGSEGV.
- 2026-06-20 03:58:44 CST: systemd recorded xdg-desktop-portal-gnome.service
exited with status=11/SEGV.
- 2026-06-20 03:59 CST: system entered reboot flow.
Current GPU state:
- prime-select query: on-demand
- switcherooctl sees AMD as default GPU and NVIDIA as offload GPU
- nvidia-smi currently fails: "NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't
communicate with the NVIDIA driver."
A local gdb backtrace was generated, but the xdg-desktop-portal-gnome
binary is stripped and local debug symbols were incomplete. Apport debug
information should be attached automatically.
