this is a long standing problem that has not been fixed for years:
pavucontrol just burns too much cpu for the job it does. even when
displaying a static tab like "configuration" it just burns one core for
nothing. accidentally leaving it open (quite common case since it is the
default "audio mixer" in xfce) can unexpectedly drain your battery.
i suspect the vu meters in input and output devices tabs are constantly
updated with high frequency even when the tabs are not visible and
nothing is being played.
