Public bug reported:

Today at the login screen whenever I entered my credentials it paused a
couple seconds and kicked me back to the login screen, seemingly
crashing. The logfiles directed me toward /tmp/.X11-unix whose
permissions were:

drwxr-xr-t gdm-greeter gdm 80 Jun 29 23:00 /tmp/.X11-unix

I performed these actions:
$ sudo trash /tmp/.X11-unix
$ sudo mkdir /tmp/.X11-unix
$ sudo chown root:root /tmp/.X11-unix
$ sudo chmod 1777 /tmp/.X11-unix
$ sudo systemctl restart gdm3

And it worked again, allowing me to login. Later in the day, my session
crashed and I was kicked into login and it seemed to fail again. I
rebooted and then it was definitely failing the same way. I used the
same trick to fix it.

Ideally would like a persistent fix and/or resolution of the underlying
problem.
