Public bug reported:
The command 'last' was removed from the 'util-linux' package in version
2.40.1 and newer packages.
If you install Jammy, 'last' is present, via 'util-linux'
2.37.2-4ubuntu3
If you d-r-u from Jammy to Noble, that package is upgraded to
2.39.3-9ubuntu6
In both of these, the command 'last' continues to work as expected.
If you d-r-u from Noble to Resolute, 'util-linux' is upgraded to a
version that no longer includes 'last' (and related bins), leaving those
commands orphaned off, not working in scripts and tools.
When you land on Resolute and attempt to run 'last', you get:
$ last -aix
Command 'last' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install util-linux # version 2.41.3-3ubuntu2, or
sudo apt install wtmpdb # version 0.75.0-5ubuntu1
$ dpkg-query -W util-linux
util-linux 2.41.3-3ubuntu2
However, 'last' isn't in 'util-linux' any longer, so the message is
misleading. You need to explicitly install 'wtmpdb' to get the previous
capability back.
This needs to be updated so customers aren't confused.
