I had the same issue after adding the machine to our active directory domain, i wasted a day troubleshooting SSSD, i believe adding the machine to ad changes the file /etc/dconf/profile/gdm, not sure though, but since the gdm greeter auto login issue started only after adding the machine to ad, and modifying the file fixed the issue, there is a high chance that this file was modified during the ad join process
