Public bug reported:
Title
AppArmor profile for transmission-gtk prevents GTK menus and file
chooser from opening on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Package
transmission-gtk (AppArmor profile)
Ubuntu Version
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (clean installation)
Description
After installing transmission-gtk from the official Ubuntu repositories
on a clean Ubuntu 26.04 LTS installation, the graphical interface starts
normally, but GTK menus and file chooser dialogs do not work correctly.
Symptoms include:
* Clicking File does not open the menu.
* Clicking the folder button to select the download directory causes a brief UI
flicker, but no file chooser appears.
* The application remains responsive otherwise.
Other GTK4 applications (for example GNOME Text Editor) open file
chooser dialogs normally, so the problem appears to be specific to
transmission-gtk.
Observed AppArmor denials
The kernel log contains multiple AppArmor denials while the problem
occurs, for example:
apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" profile="transmission-gtk"
Examples include attempts to access:
* /home/<user>/.bashrc
* /home/<user>/.profile
* /home/<user>/.bash_logout
* /home/<user>/.bash_history
* /var/lib/snapd/desktop/icons/
The application also prints messages such as:
Gtk-CRITICAL: The layout manager of type GtkBoxLayout ...
GVFS-WARNING: can't init metadata tree ... Permission denied
How to reproduce
1. Install Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (clean installation).
2. Install transmission-gtk from the Ubuntu repositories.
3. Launch Transmission GTK.
4. Click File or the folder icon used to choose the download directory.
Expected result
The menu opens normally and the file chooser dialog appears.
Actual result
Nothing opens. The window briefly flickers but no menu or file chooser
is displayed.
Workaround
Changing the AppArmor profile from enforce to complain immediately
resolves the issue.
sudo apt install apparmor-utils
sudo aa-complain /usr/bin/transmission-gtk
After switching to complain mode:
* File menu works correctly.
* File chooser opens normally.
* Download directory can be selected.
Switching back reproduces the problem immediately:
sudo aa-enforce /usr/bin/transmission-gtk
After returning to enforce mode, the File menu and file chooser stop
working again.
This behaviour is fully reproducible.
Additional information
* Installation is a clean Ubuntu 26.04 LTS installation.
* transmission-gtk was installed from the official Ubuntu repositories.
* The problem does not affect other GTK applications tested on the same system.
* The issue appears to be related to the AppArmor profile shipped with Ubuntu
rather than the Transmission application itself.
