re-upping in 2026 in Resolute, because I just hit this, and landed here,
and you did leave it open. ;-) Maybe my configuration is a little less
*unusual* and so worth another look. Also, some extra observations.

This is on an Intel-based Dell laptop, running all up to date and not-
much-customised Resolute 26.04, in Gnome, with Wayland (obviously). In
my case the secondary keyboard layout in question is "English (UK)
Macintosh". The primary is just "English (UK)". As most of my other
computers are macs, when I'm using this in clamshell mode, I prefer to
use a Mac keyboard on this too, which mostly works fine, although I do
wish it could emulate the Mac's way of entering special characters as I
have more of them memorised...

(In details which I think are irrelevant: It's a Keychron V6 Max in Mac
layout, usually connected via bluetooth. Wireless USB dongle tested too,
no difference.)

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.input-sources xkb-options
['compose:ralt', 'lv3:lalt_switch']

Alternative Characters Key was set to "Layout Default". On deselecting
that and not selecting any of the keys, no change.

The new findings I didn't see above:

In fact it doesn't work to select *any* of the available keys to be the
compose key. The choice appears to be simply ignored. It doesn't seem to
be specific to Right Alt and therefore a possible clash with other
functionality trying to use it. I didn't exhaustively try them all but
did try Caps Lock, Right Super, Right Ctrl and Insert. They all just
kept on performing their usual functions. Logging out/in made no
difference.

What does work: Making it the first input source in the list, Compose
instantly works perfectly (no restarts needed) with Right Alt selected,
but the layout that *was* there, (English (UK) in my case) now in second
place, now does not have functioning compose.

So it really does seem to be completely agnostic to the specific
keyboard layout, it just only works for the first one, whatever it is.
So the workaround remains, when you change input source you have to go
to keyboard settings and change it to be the first/default one. A this
is a change that happens going between standalone and clamshell/docked
mode, it's going to be frequent enough to be annoying.
