If I replace your init script with mine it works quite fine.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d# ./postgresql-8.2 
Usage: ./postgresql-8.2 {start|stop|restart|reload|status}
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d# ./postgresql-8.2 stop

ok
