> (2) I then ran Software Updater and made sure all updates were applied
for 25.10. I also ran apt autoremove to get rid of any orphaned
packages. I shut down the VM and made a copy of the VDI file. I still
have that if I need to run any more upgrade attempts or provide more
info about the environment.

As I said on Discourse [1], autoremove does not remove orphaned
packages. All it does is removing packages marked as automatically
installed on which no other installed package has a dependency. Removing
orphaned packages is not straight forward, but not that hard either. [2]

Plus, packages from 3rd parties that overlap or replace Ubuntu versions
with newer ones should be downgraded. If they are from PPA sources,
exclusively, use ppa-purge [3], if not you'll have to take matters into
your own hands; see my suggestion. [4]

Until proven otherwise, I'll say this is an invalid report.
