Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop Sharing Fails While Remote Login Works
Summary
After upgrading/installing Ubuntu 26.04 with GNOME 50, GNOME Remote Desktop
behaves differently on a physical host than on a VMware guest.
Remote Login works correctly, but Desktop Sharing immediately disconnects.
The same Ubuntu version and GNOME Remote Desktop version work correctly inside
a VMware VM.
________________________________________
Environment
Physical Host
• Ubuntu Desktop 26.04
• GNOME 50.1
• GNOME Remote Desktop 50.x
• Intel iGPU (i915)
• Headless hypervisor
• DisplayPort EDID emulator attached
• Automatic login enabled
Working Comparison System
• Ubuntu Desktop 26.04
• GNOME 50.1
• GNOME Remote Desktop 50.x
• VMware virtual display adapter
• Desktop Sharing works normally
________________________________________
Configuration
In Settings:
Settings
→ System
→ Remote Desktop
Both features enabled:
Desktop Sharing
Remote Login
Results:
Remote Login = Port 3389
Desktop Sharing = Port 3390
Confirmed by:
sudo ss -tlnp | grep -E '3389|3390'
Output:
LISTEN *:3389
LISTEN *:3390
________________________________________
Expected Behaviour
Connecting to:
hostname:3390
should attach to the existing logged-in desktop session.
This works correctly on a VMware guest.
________________________________________
Actual Behaviour
Connecting to:
hostname:3390
causes:
RDP client window appears briefly
then disconnects
``
Desktop Sharing never becomes usable.
Remote Login on:
hostname:3389
works normally.

Relevant Logs
While attempting to connect to Desktop Sharing:
Failed to record monitor:
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed:
Unknown monitor
followed by:
ERRINFO_RPC_INITIATED_DISCONNECT
and:
[RDP] Network or intentional disconnect, stopping session
________________________________________
Monitor Detection
Kernel detects display connection:
DP-2 connected
GNOME also reports a monitor:
xrandr --listmonitors
Output:
Monitors: 1
0: +*Meta-0 1920x1080
So a monitor exists and is visible to GNOME.
________________________________________
Additional Findings
Mutter reports monitor-related inconsistencies.
Remote Desktop logs repeatedly contain:
Failed to record monitor: Unknown monitor
despite:
Monitors: 1
Meta-0
being present.

Session Information
The active user session is:
gdm-wayland-session
gnome-shell --session=ubuntu
Session type:
loginctl show-session <session> -p Type
returns:
Type=wayland
``

Attempted Fixes
Tried without success:
• Recreating GNOME Remote Desktop certificates
• Recreating credentials
• Resetting GNOME keyring
• Enabling/disabling Desktop Sharing
• Enabling/disabling Remote Login
• Rebooting
• Using HDMI dummy plug
• Replacing dummy plug with DisplayPort EDID emulator
• Confirming monitor exists via xrandr
• Confirming Desktop Sharing listens on 3390
• Confirming Remote Login listens on 3389
None changed the behaviour.
________________________________________
Most Important Observation
The issue appears specific to:
Desktop Sharing
because:
Remote Login (3389) works
Desktop Sharing (3390) disconnects
The disconnect is accompanied by:
Failed to record monitor: Unknown monitor
even though:
xrandr --listmonitors
reports a valid monitor.
