Opening a file chooser from Chrome or Firefox consistently takes
approximately 20-30 seconds.
Examples:
- ChatGPT "Upload file"
- Gmail attachment dialog
- Any browser file upload
Nemo opens the same directory instantly.
LibreOffice File->Open is also instant.
The problem is reproducible every time.
I isolated the issue to the GNOME FileChooser portal.
Creating:
~/.config/xdg-desktop-portal/ubuntu-portals.conf
with:
[preferred]
default=gnome;gtk;
org.freedesktop.impl.portal.FileChooser=gtk;
completely eliminates the delay.
This suggests the issue is specific to
xdg-desktop-portal-gnome's FileChooser backend.
