The first thing I suspect here is the Nouveau graphics driver. It's
always been unreliable and is also not thread safe, so we know it
crashes the desktop and apps regularly.
Please use the 'Additional Drivers' app to install a supported Nvidia
driver. If you still have problems after that, or if you would prefer to
stay on Nouveau, then we can provide instructions on what to do next.
